Why Digestion Slows Down with Age: Causes, Common Problems and What Helps

Digestion slows down with age because the muscles of the gut get weaker, the stomach empties more slowly, the colon pushes waste along less strongly, and the body makes less of some digestive enzymes. Lifestyle changes that come with age, like taking more medicines, moving less, and drinking less water, slow it down even more.

These changes are common. UCLA Health notes that at least 40% of older adults have at least one digestive complaint. About 1 in 5 adults over 65 living at home have long-term constipation, and in care homes the figure rises to as many as 8 in 10. A study that compared healthy adults with an average age of 81 to adults with an average age of 24 found that waste moved through the colon much more slowly in the older group.

The good news is that the gut has a lot of reserve built in, so ageing affects it less than many other organs. Here is what changes, why, and what you can do about it.

How Each Part of the Gut Changes with Age

Ageing touches every part of the digestive system, but not all parts change the same way.

Mouth and Teeth

Loose or missing teeth and poorly fitting dentures make it harder to chew. Food that is not chewed well reaches the stomach in bigger pieces, which makes the rest of digestion work harder.

Oesophagus (Food Pipe)

The muscles of the food pipe squeeze with less force, and the valve at the top becomes less tight. This is called the presbyosophagus. It usually does not stop food from going down. But the valve at the bottom of the food pipe can weaken too, which lets acid flow back up and raises the risk of acid reflux.

Stomach

The stomach becomes less stretchy, so it holds less food, and it empties into the small intestine more slowly. Its lining also gets weaker at protecting itself, so painkillers like aspirin and ibuprofen are more likely to cause ulcers.

In healthy older people, stomach acid usually stays about the same. But atrophic gastritis, a condition that thins the stomach lining and cuts acid, becomes more common. It affects about 25% of people over 60. Less acid means protein, vitamin B12, iron, and calcium are harder to absorb.

Small Intestine

The small intestine itself changes little, and most nutrients are still absorbed well. Two things do change:

  • Less lactase: The body makes less of the enzyme that digests milk sugar, so many older adults start to get gas, bloating, or loose motions after dairy.
  • Bacterial overgrowth: Too many bacteria can build up in the small intestine. Such conditions can cause pain, bloating, and weight loss and lower the absorption of vitamin B12, iron, and calcium.

Pancreas, Liver, and Gallbladder

The pancreas gets smaller, and some of its tissue turns to scar tissue, but in most people it still makes enough digestive enzymes. Studies disagree here: one small study of older adults with an average age of 72 found 45% lower enzyme output than in younger people. The liver also handles alcohol and medicines less efficiently with age.

Large Intestine and Rectum

This is where slowing shows up most. Waste moves through the colon more slowly, the rectum gets a little bigger, and it squeezes less strongly when full. Together, these make constipation more common. In older women, weaker pelvic floor muscles add to the problem.ย

Studies, mostly in animals, also suggest the colon loses some of its nerve cells and its wall becomes stiffer with age.

Other Reasons Digestion Gets Slower After 60

Age alone is only part of the story. Experts say lifestyle often has a bigger effect on digestion than the ageing gut itself.

More Medicines

Older adults often take several medicines, and many of them slow the gut or irritate it:

  • Blood pressure and joint pain medicines can cause constipation
  • Painkillers like ibuprofen (NSAIDs) can cause stomach bleeding and ulcers. Get checked right away if your stool turns dark or has blood in it
  • Iron and calcium supplements, some antidepressants, and strong painkillers can also cause constipation

Less Movement

Walking and exercise help push food through the gut. When people move less, the colon slows down too.

Less Water And Less Fibre

The feeling of thirst gets weaker with age, so many older people drink less without noticing. Even mild dehydration raises the risk of constipation. Smaller appetites and trouble chewing also mean fewer fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which means less fibre.

Changes in Gut Bacteria

The mix of bacteria in your gut shifts as you age. A study of 178 older adults in Ireland found that people living in long-term care had much less varied gut bacteria than those living at home.ย

Their diets were different too, and less varied gut bacteria went along with more frailty and inflammation.

When this balance is off, the gut often feels heavy, gassy, and slow through the day. Zandu Good Gut Cleanse & Detox Shots are made for this kind of everyday gut reset, when digestion just does not feel right.

Long-Term Health Conditions

Diabetes, Parkinson's disease, an underactive thyroid, and past stomach or bowel surgery can all slow digestion. Many of the medicines for these conditions do the same.

Common Digestive Problems in Older Adults

A slower gut makes some problems more likely after 60.

Constipation

This is the most common one. About 1 in 5 adults over 65 living at home have long-term constipation, and up to 80% of people in care homes do. Signs include fewer bowel movements, hard stools, straining, and a feeling that you have not fully emptied.

Going to the toilet every day does not always mean your gut is healthy. A survey by Zandu Care researchers found that nearly 1 in 2 people still struggled to empty their bowels fully, and more than half still felt food sitting in their stomach hours after eating.

For hard stools and irregular motions, Zandu Good Gut Constipation Relief tablets are made to give smooth, predictable relief.

Acid Reflux and GERD

Acid reflux is very common in older adults. A weaker valve at the bottom of the food pipe lets acid flow back up, causing heartburn and sour burps. Left untreated for years, it can lead to Barrett's oesophagus, which in rare cases turns into cancer, so it is worth discussing with an Ayurvedic doctor.

For burning and reflux after spicy food, tea, or late dinners, Zandu Good Gut Acidity & Bloating Relief is made for quick relief and fewer repeat episodes.

Gas and Bloating

Slower movement, lower lactase, and changes in gut bacteria all make gas and bloating more common, especially after dairy, beans, and cabbage-family vegetables. If bloating comes with burning or sour burps after meals, Zandu Good Gut Acidity & Bloating Relief can help settle both.

Diverticular Disease

Small pouches, known as diverticula, form in the wall of the colon. About 50% of people over 60 have them, rising to about 70% by age 80. Most people never have symptoms. If the pouches get inflamed (diverticulitis), it can cause pain and fever and needs treatment.

Low Vitamin B12

Less stomach acid and bacterial overgrowth both make vitamin B12 harder to absorb. In a survey of 466 adults aged 65 and over in New Zealand, 12% had low vitamin B12, and another 28% were borderline. Low B12 can cause tiredness, numbness, and memory problems.

Other Problems

  • Fatty liver disease: more likely with obesity, diabetes, or high triglycerides
  • Colon polyps and colon cancer: the risk rises with age
  • Haemorrhoids, gallstones, and stomach ulcers, especially with regular painkiller use

Foods That Get Harder to Digest with Age

Some foods you ate easily at 30 may start to cause trouble at 60. You usually do not need to stop them; just change how and how much you eat them.

Food

Why it gets harder

What helps

Milk and dairy

Less lactase to digest milk sugar

Choose curd, yoghurt, or hard cheese, which have less lactose.

Fried and fatty food

Needs more enzymes and stays in the stomach longer

Smaller portions, eaten with vegetables or salad

Red meat

Slower protein digestion can cause heaviness and constipation.

Slow-cook it, or switch to fish, chicken, eggs, or dal.

Raw vegetables

Tough fibre can cause gas if digestion is slow.

Steam or lightly cook them

Beans, chana, rajma, cabbage, broccoli

Gut bacteria ferment their sugars, making gas.

Soak well, cook fully, and eat smaller amounts.

Spicy food

The gut becomes more sensitive to chilli.

Use less chilli and more mild spices like ginger, jeera, and saunf.

Sour and acidic food

Tomato, citrus, and vinegar can trigger reflux.

Eat in moderation, not late at night.

Tea, coffee, and alcohol

The body clears them more slowly, and they worsen reflux.

Cut back, and avoid them in the evening.

Packaged and processed food

Additives and artificial sweeteners can cause bloating.

Choose fresh, home-cooked meals.

How to Keep Digestion Healthy as You Age

You cannot stop your gut from ageing, but simple daily habits can keep it working well.

Eat Smaller Meals, More Often

Four or five small meals are easier on a slower stomach than two or three big ones. Chew each bite well, especially if you wear dentures.

Add Fibre Slowly

Whole grains, dal, fruits, vegetables, and oats keep stools soft and regular. Increase fibre slowly, a little at a time, to avoid gas and bloating.

Drink Water Throughout the Day

Do not wait until you feel thirsty, since thirst signals get weaker with age. Water helps fiber do its job and prevents hard stools.

Move Every Day

Michigan Medicine advises at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, four days a week, to help prevent constipation. Even a short walk after dinner helps. In one study, one hour a day of jogging reduced the time it takes for food to move through the gut by about 17 hours.

Eat Probiotic Foods

Curd, buttermilk, and fermented foods support healthy gut bacteria, which matters more as the gut's bacteria become less varied with age.

But fermented foods alone may not be enough. The same Zandu Care survey found that among people who ate fermented foods, 3 in 5 still struggled to complete a bowel movement regularly, and more than half still did not have consistently smooth, easy stools.

Give Your Stomach Time Before Bed

Finish dinner 2 to 3 hours before bed, and do not lie down right after eating. This lowers the chance of night-time reflux.

Review Your Medicines

Ask your Ayurvedic doctor or pharmacist once a year whether any of your medicines could be causing constipation, reflux, or stomach irritation.

Keep a Healthy Weight And Manage Stress

Extra weight greatly raises the risk of acid reflux. Yoga, deep breathing, and good sleep help calm the gut.

If your gut often feels heavy, gassy, or sluggish from irregular meals or eating out, Zandu Good Gut Cleanse & Detox Shots are made as a daily gut reset for when digestion just feels off.

Signs You Should Get Checked

Some slowing is normal with age, but these signs are not:

  • Belly pain or discomfort that does not go away
  • Weight loss without trying
  • Long-term constipation or diarrhoea, or a clear change in bowel habits
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Heartburn several times a week
  • Blood in your stool, or black, tarry stool

Also keep up with colon cancer screening. The risk of colon polyps rises with age, and a colonoscopy can find and remove them before they turn into cancer. Ask your healthcare provider when you should start and how often to repeat it.

Conclusion

Digestion slows with age because the gut muscles get weaker, the stomach empties more slowly, the colon moves waste along less strongly, and the body makes less of some enzymes like lactase. More medicines, less movement, less water, and changing gut bacteria add to the slowdown.

Most of these changes are mild, and the gut has plenty of reserve. Smaller meals, more fiber added slowly, enough water, daily walks, and an early dinner go a long way. Pay attention to new or lasting symptoms, keep up with screening, and talk to an Ayurvedic doctor when something does not feel right.
