Zandu Capsules are plant-based

Do you know most capsule products are of animal origin?

Gelatin Vs Vegetarian Capsules
Vegetarian capsules are made up of cellulose, an important structural component in plants. To be more specific, the main ingredient of vegetarian capsules is hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC). Gelatin capsules, both hard and soft shells, are usually derived from the hydrolysis of collagen from bovine, fish or swine.

Ethical Concerns with Gelatin Capsules

The production of gelatin capsules has raised concerns among some population groups, such as vegetarians or vegans, as well as those who belong to religious and ethnic groups who are forbidden from consuming such animal-based products. Luckily, with technological advances, vegetarian capsules (also known as vegetable capsule or cellulose capsule) are a viable alternative available to all of us.

Cost of Production

In the current market, gelatin capsules are more widely used than vegetarian capsules because their cost of production is lower. Despite the cost factor, vegetarian capsules offer extra benefits, aside from being a good substitute for gelatin capsules. The table below compares the differences between gelatin and vegetarian capsules.

Which is better?

Vegetarian capsules stand out when it comes to the aspect of stability because they have lower moisture content, lower hygroscopicity and higher stability in different ranges of temperature as well as humidity as compared to gelatin capsules. In terms of solubility, both types of capsules dissolve well at human body temperature (37 °C). However, vegetarian capsules are readily dissolved in water at room
temperature, whereas the solubility of gelatin capsule starts decreasing as temperature drops below 37 °C and fails to dissolve below 30°C. Additionally, vegetarian capsules are compatible with a larger variety of fill materials, while gelatin capsules can be easily degraded with aldehydic end-products, mostly materials in liquid and semi-liquid form.

The Takeaway

Be mindful of what you feed yourself and your loved ones. When it comes to choosing a food or nutritional product, it is always important
to READ THE LABELS carefully. A good product label is one that abides by the rules and regulations and provides accurate information for consumers. Be a smart and curious consumer, who asks questions when in doubt. At the end of the day, please remember to always to consult an Ayurvedic physician for more detailed and personalized information.
